Various medications have been found to be effective in the treatment of depression. These include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Effexor, Tofranil, Wellbutrin, Elavil, Nardil, Parnate, lithium, and several other medications. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for you to build up a therapeutic level of the medication in your system.
Some medications may have negative side effects. Some of these side effects may be temporary and decrease over time, or they may be handled with combinations of other medications. In some cases, patients with severe depression may wish to consult their physician about the possibility of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
